CPPSP dials into discernment

The newest cohort of Creighton Pre-Professional Scholars gathers for a picture under the blue lights at the Harper Center. About a hundred scholars joined us to launch our Fall semester programming
From Katie Larson, M.S.- Director, Center for Advising Resources and Support

The Creighton Pre-Professional Scholars program kicked off Fall semester with its annual September Welcome dinner, offering new and returning students a chance to connect with one another and the admissions staff of the Creighton professional schools they plan to attend. This year, the signature pre-health program is placing it’s focus on supporting student discernment.

This year’s dinner for the program, sponsored by the Center for Advising Resources and Support (CARS), had the highest percentage participation of any CPPSP event yet, and the largest number of students as we have added a third cohort to the program. Dinner was a great opportunity to let students know about upcoming events with their professional schools – from coffee with the deans to tours of new facilities -- and to plan for another year involved in this comprehensive, intentional pre-professional advising program.

The CPPSP focus on discernment isn’t new, but this year, students will see even more emphasis on a topic that’s central to being a Creighton student. Making good choices when faced with tough decisions? Our Pre-Professional Scholars are ready to lean, and they will lean into that discernment tradition with Fall programming that helps students understand both the kind of health care provider that they want to be, and also why they are called to that path. In October, all our cohorts will have the opportunity to engage in decision-making conversations.

First-year students will join advisors from the Center for Advising Resources and Support, CPPSP Student Leaders, Campus Ministry, and the Fahey Career Center at the annual First-Year Fall Retreat. They’ll take a day out of their semester to think about calling, professionalism, leadership – and have a lot of fun in the process in a program peppered with “Minute-to-Win-It” competitions and collaboration with their fellow freshmen. We’re looking forward to gathering as a group on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Earlier that week, our second- and third-year students will join us for the first CPPSP discernment night. Sophomore students will engage in a discussion of Ignatian-inspired decision-making when they attend The Pressure of the Perfect Decision. Our Ignatian tradition gives us amazing tools to make difficult personal and ethical decisions, and we’ll explore some questions to ask ourselves to confidently and thoughtfully make those big choices. Our Juniors, just getting ready to start the journey of applying to professional school, will engage in an activity designed to prep for those personal statement essays that are just around the corner. The Wandering Map exercise asks us to take a look at our lives and make connections – we may even produce a few “a-ha” moments, helping students understand more deeply why they’re drawn to the professional school path. We’re gathering both groups the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 18th.

Finally, we’re pleased to announce hiring one new staff member, who will be coordinating our CPPSP program. Martha Lemar, J.D., brings wonderful experience to our students and our team. She’s a Creighton Law alum with a strong background in education and student support, and she’s planning some great programming for our scholars.
